How to Claim a Dead Subreddit

A step-by-step guide to taking over abandoned Reddit communities through Reddit's official r/redditrequest process.

1.Understanding the Process

Reddit has an official process for adopting abandoned subreddits called r/redditrequest. When a subreddit's moderators have been inactive for a significant period, Reddit allows other users to request moderator access and revive the community.

This is completely legitimate and encouraged by Reddit. They don't want communities to sit abandoned.

💡Key fact:Reddit looks at whether mods have been active on Reddit overall (not just in that subreddit). A mod who posts elsewhere but ignores their subreddit may still count as "active."

2.Check If a Subreddit Qualifies

A subreddit is eligible for a takeover request if:

  • All human moderators have been inactive for 60+ days
  • The subreddit is public (not private or restricted)
  • The subreddit is not banned
  • You have a legitimate plan to revive it

Use the DeadSubs search tool to find subreddits that meet these criteria automatically.

3.Check Mod Activity

This is the most important step. You need to verify that the existing mods are truly inactive.

How to check:

  1. Go to reddit.com/r/SUBREDDITNAME/about/moderators
  2. Note all human moderators (ignore bots like AutoModerator, FlairHelperBot etc.)
  3. Click each human mod's username
  4. Look at their Posts and Comments tabs
  5. Note the date of their most recent activity anywhere on Reddit

What counts as inactive:

  • • No posts or comments for 60+ days
  • • Suspended or deleted account
⚠️Warning: If even one mod has been active recently, your request will likely be denied. Check every human mod on the list.

4.Send Modmail First

Before submitting your request, you mustsend a message to the subreddit's mod team first. Reddit requires this as proof you attempted to contact the existing mods.

How to send modmail:

  1. Go to reddit.com/r/SUBREDDITNAME
  2. In the sidebar, find "Message the mods" or click the envelope icon
  3. Send a message like this:
Subject: Interested in helping moderate this community

Hi,

I've noticed that r/SUBREDDITNAME has been inactive for some time
and I'm interested in helping revive and moderate this community.

I have experience with [relevant topic] and would love to bring
this subreddit back to life with regular content and moderation.

Please let me know if you're open to adding a new moderator,
or if you're still actively managing this subreddit.

Thank you
💡Save the modmail link. You'll need it later. After sending, click on the message and copy the URL.

5.Wait 5 Days

After sending modmail, you must wait at least 5 days before submitting your request to r/redditrequest. This gives the existing mods a chance to respond.

If they respond and say they're still active, respect that and move on to another subreddit. If they don't respond after 5 days, proceed to the next step.

Pro tip:Use this waiting time to plan what you'll do with the subreddit: content strategy, rules, description, banner image, etc.

6.Submit Your Request to r/redditrequest

After 5 days, go to reddit.com/r/redditrequest and create a new post.

Post format:

  • Post type: Link post
  • Title: Must be exactly the subreddit name e.g. r/twitchstreams
  • Link URL: The full URL of the subreddit
  • Add flair: Select the appropriate flair (usually "Mod Removal Request" or "Abandoned")

Body text (optional but recommended):

Requesting r/SUBREDDITNAME.

The subreddit has been inactive for X months with no new posts.
The sole human moderator, u/USERNAME, has been inactive on Reddit
for X months (last activity: DATE).

I would like to revive this community as [describe your plan].

I sent modmail on [DATE] and received no response.

7.Reply to request_bot

After you post, an official bot called u/request_bot will automatically comment on your post asking for:

  1. Why you want to moderate this community
  2. A link to the modmail message you sent in Step 4

You must reply to this comment within a reasonable time or your request may be denied.

Example reply:

1. I want to revive r/SUBREDDITNAME as an active community for
[topic]. I have experience in this niche and plan to post regular
content, enforce quality rules, and grow the subscriber base.

2. Here is the modmail I sent 5 days ago: [paste modmail link]

8.After Approval

If approved, request_bot will comment saying "Your request to moderate r/SUBREDDITNAME has been granted!"

You'll now have full moderator access. Here's what to do immediately:

  • Update the subreddit description and rules
  • Add a new banner and icon
  • Post a welcome/revival announcement
  • Remove spam or outdated pinned posts
  • Set up AutoModerator basic rules
  • Start posting regular content

9.Tips for Success

  • Be specific about your revival plan. Vague requests get denied
  • Check ALL human mods. Missing one active mod kills your request
  • Don't rush. Wait the full 5 days after modmail
  • Have karma. Reddit may look at your account age and karma
  • One request at a time. Reddit limits you to one request every 15 days
  • Be honest. Don't claim you'll do things you won't
