Is this legal?
Yes. Reddit has an official process called r/redditrequest specifically for adopting abandoned communities. This is encouraged by Reddit and has been running since 2010.
How long does approval take?
Currently about 5 days. Reddit admins review each request manually after you submit it to r/redditrequest.
What if the mod comes back?
If the mod responds to your modmail or Reddit finds recent activity, your request will be denied. That's why we check inactivity carefully before flagging a subreddit as eligible.
Do I need a Reddit account?
You need one to submit the takeover request on r/redditrequest. You don't need one to use DeadSubs to search for and identify candidates.
What counts as "inactive"?
No Reddit activity (posts or comments anywhere on Reddit) for 60+ days. Not just inactive in that subreddit, but inactive on the entire platform.
Can I claim any subreddit?
Only public subreddits where all human mods are inactive for 60+ days. Private, banned, or actively moderated subreddits cannot be claimed.
