How to Search Within a Subreddit (Desktop, App & Google)
How to search inside a specific subreddit on desktop, in the Reddit app, and with Google — plus search operators for authors, titles, and flairs, and how to find subreddits themselves.
How to Search Within a Subreddit
Quick answer: On desktop, open the subreddit and use the search bar — Reddit offers to search in r/NAME only. In the app, tap the search icon on the community page. You can also go straight to reddit.com/r/NAME/search/?q=YOUR+QUERY&restrict_sr=1, or use Google with site:reddit.com/r/NAME your query, which often finds older posts Reddit's search misses.
Key takeaways
- Start the search from inside the subreddit to limit it to that community.
restrict_sr=1in the search URL forces a subreddit-only search.- Google
site:search is often better for older posts. - Operators like
author:,title:, andflair:narrow results further.
On Desktop (reddit.com)
- Open the subreddit, e.g.
reddit.com/r/NAME. - Click the search bar at the top. Reddit shows the community as a filter next to your query.
- Type your query and press Enter. Results stay inside that subreddit.
- Use the Sort and Time options to show the newest posts, or the top posts of the past week, month, or year.
Direct URL: https://www.reddit.com/r/NAME/search/?q=YOUR+QUERY&restrict_sr=1
The restrict_sr=1 parameter limits results to the subreddit. Add &sort=new for the newest posts first.
On old.reddit.com
Old Reddit's search is simpler and sometimes more predictable:
- Go to
old.reddit.com/r/NAME. - Type your query in the search box in the sidebar.
- Tick limit my search to r/NAME.
Old Reddit also lets you click any post's flair to see every post with that flair.
In the Reddit App
- Open the subreddit.
- Tap the search icon at the top of the community page.
- Enter your query. Searches started inside a community are limited to it.
With Google
Reddit's own search misses a lot of older content. Google often finds it:
site:reddit.com/r/NAME your search terms
Tips:
- Put exact phrases in quotes:
site:reddit.com/r/NAME "exact phrase". - Use Tools → Any time in Google to restrict by date.
- To search across several subreddits, combine them:
(site:reddit.com/r/one OR site:reddit.com/r/two) query.
Reddit Search Operators
These operators narrow Reddit searches. Support varies slightly between new Reddit, old Reddit, and the app, so try one when results look off.
| Operator | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|
author: | Posts by a specific user | author:spez |
title: | Words in the post title | title:beginner guide |
selftext: | Words in a text post's body | selftext:budget |
flair: | Posts with a specific flair | flair:"Weekly Thread" |
url: | Link posts to a domain | url:youtube.com |
self:yes / self:no | Only text posts / only link posts | self:yes budget |
subreddit: | Limit to a subreddit | subreddit:personalfinance emergency fund |
AND / OR / NOT | Combine terms (uppercase) | keto NOT dessert |
